In 1998 United Arts of Central Florida began publishing a cultural newsletter called ArtsSpeak. It was a glossy publication that featured stories on the larger cultural organizations that were the center of the arts community. It was so well received that the following year UA decided to venture into the magazine world with O’Arts Magazine (no matter what we name the magazine, people still call it O’Arts.)
The Orlando Sentinel, which was the largest niche publisher at the time, produced the magazine. UA had a staff of five, so they decided to bring on someone to manage the magazine process, as well as other development responsibilities – enter me.
The magazine has grown in so many ways due to outstanding community partners. It has weathered recessions, several changes in publishers, a pandemic, name change and the tremendous growth in the cultural sector – just to name a few.
Our Central Florida community has rallied with grace and commitment at every turn. Three decades is no small feat for any print magazine, and now we celebrate this new website.
On a personal note, I have raised 3.5 children (still working on the caboose) who constantly attended cultural events. I’ve been blessed with three grandchildren, increased my highlighting budget to cover those well-earned gray hairs and met some of the most fascinating and talented people.
To date, we have shared more than 4,500 stories. As we all know, the arts are more than just a beautiful bauble, they are essential to our existence. The magazine is always a work in progress, and it is our hope and intention that we continue to showcase the breadth of our cultural community.
I’m so proud of our little engine that could, our writers who tell the stories and our advertisers who support us. I have so much gratitude.
May we continue to lift others in that light and let creativity shine.
