There’s going to be a significant enhancement to A Charlie Brown Christmas: Live on Stage at Orlando Family Stage: live music. A trio of jazz musicians will perform the classic Vince Guaraldi score as a cast of adult actors reenacts the hilarious and heartwarming scenarios from the immortal 1964 TV special.

There’ll be 32 performances between November 23 and December 27, mostly at 2 and 5:30 p.m., with several 7 p.m. shows on Fridays. Last year’s equally long run was a near sellout for every performance, while the inaugural performance the prior year proved to be the best-selling offering in the theater’s history. Good grief!

You know the story of A Charlie Brown Christmas, which has been embedded in popular culture for more than a half-century but continues to resonate. The plot follows the round-headed title character’s quest to preserve the sanctity of the holiday season while everyone around him goes foursquare for commercialism.

Good ol’ Chuck struggles to rehab a sad little tree into something more suitable for the season while Snoopy outfits his doghouse with enough garish lights to be seen from space. There’s ice skating, carol singing and a pageant rehearsal that busts out into that impromptu dance party that we’ve all seen parodied and paid homage countless times.

Jeff Revels, the theater’s artistic director, will mark the third annual presentation of the live show at OFS by replacing the prerecorded audio tracks that had been previously used with living, breathing players who have the chops to re-create the late Guaraldi’s iconic score. Revels, who’ll also direct the production, will make it work by having the musicians do double duty as supporting characters in the story: The pianist will portray Schroeder (naturally), the bassist will portray Pig-Pen and the drummer will portray the all-but-forgotten Shermy.

It’s a new concept for Orlando but not for OFS, which has been sending a similarly structured show on tour since 2024. (This year, the road version is expected to visit more than 30 markets across the U.S. even as the home team tears up the boards in Orlando.)

Upgrading the local presentation accordingly, notes Revels, is a way to reward the support of audiences who have made an unprecedented investment in the show’s sincerity and gentle nostalgia. But don’t assume that A Charlie Brown Christmas will be the holiday feature at OFS in perpetuity. “I’m not looking to have one show that’s always the Christmas show, or the holiday show,” notes Revels. Instead, he adds, we may see A Charlie Brown Christmas staged in rotation with a few other titles yet to be revealed. But for now, at least, as the theater continues its 100th-anniversary season, it’s sticking squarely with history’s most celebrated blockhead.

Orlando Family Stage is located at 1001 East Princeton Street, Orlando. For more information, call or visit the website.
