Central Florida Community Arts (CFCArts) is looking to the proverbial skies this summer: The organization’s Final Frontier concert turns all 350-plus volunteer members of its symphony orchestra loose on a program of selections that have space on the brain.

Some are hallowed classics (like Holst’s The Planets) that are intrinsically associated with the mysteries of “out there,” while others have gained that association via their use in other media (like Richard Strauss’s Also Sprach Zarathustra, which became perhaps the most recognized theme in film history from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey).

Then there are soundtrack excerpts composed specifically for classic science-fiction films and TV shows, including main and closing titles from the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. And to satisfy your nerd friends who insist that Galaxy Quest is a Star Wars movie, its theme is in the mix as well.

Rounding out the program are three original compositions by Julian Bond, a highly accomplished local musician and a frequent collaborator with CFCArts as both a writer and arranger. In the conductor’s seat will be Justin Muchoney, the organization’s artistic and executive director.

The presentation will make copious use of lasers and other dramatic lighting effects, as well as projected images and video that will really give the audience the feel of flying free from Earth’s orbit and confronting the infinite.

No offense to Holst, but a good shot of Mars is worth a thousand notes.
